What is the process of creating a screen for printing?
Process of Creating a Screen for Printing
- Prepare the artwork: Design and create the artwork that will be printed on the screen using a graphic design software.
- Create the stencil: Convert the artwork into a stencil by printing it on a transparent film or acetate sheet. The areas that should be printed will be kept transparent, while the rest will be blocked out using a light-sensitive emulsion.
- Coat the screen: Apply a light-sensitive emulsion to the screen frame and expose it to light through the stencil. The emulsion will harden in the exposed areas, creating a stencil on the screen.
- Wash out the stencil: Rinse the screen with water to remove the unexposed emulsion, leaving the stencil of the artwork on the screen.
- Dry the screen: Allow the screen to dry completely before use.
- Prepare the printing press: Set up the printing press according to the requirements of the printing method and materials being used.
- Load the screen: Secure the screen onto the printing press and align it with the substrate (the material being printed on).
- Apply ink: Use a squeegee or other method to apply ink to the screen, which will then be transferred to the substrate through the open areas of the stencil.
- Print: Lower the printing platen onto the substrate and apply pressure to transfer the ink from the screen to the substrate.
- Cure the print: Allow the printed substrate to dry or cure according to the specifications of the ink being used.
